A short story about Walmart®. Wal-Mart is a worldwide retailer headquartered in Bentonville, a small Arkansas city in the US. This is the largest public company based on income. Its shares are traded in many international stock exchanges. The Wal-Mart Corporation operations division is Marketside and Sam’s Club shops. Wal-Mart sells trade with local names in several international markets such as ASDA in the UK, Mi Bodega or Superama in Mexico, Seiyu in Japan or Bompreio in Brazil.

The history of Wal-Mart is like a curriculum vitae for company founder Sam Walton. He started a discount store in 1950 under the name Walton’s Five and Dime. Walton previously operated the Ben Franklin shop in Newport – Arkansas. He franchised from 1944 to 1950 and then moved in 1950 to Bentonville in Arkansas. He continued his relationship with Ben Franklin but changed the name of the store to Walton’s Five and Dime.

Walton had a small network of Walton’s Five and Dime stores in the late 1950s. He has realized that successful discount retailing means providing savings to customers in addition to getting the best prices from suppliers. Walton’s method is very different from its competitors, although higher sales at Walton’s stores are evidence that he has found a model that will encourage greater profits for his company.

Sam Walton owned 11 stores in 1962. He and his wife, Helen, took great speculation and invested everything back in a new shop at Rogers in Arkansas. This became Wal-Mart’s first branded store. This concept resulted in immediate success resulting in tremendous growth of the brand and 24 stores in 1967. Sam Walton entered shops as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in 1967. In 1972, the Walmart company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. This gave an injection of cash and allowed the company to 125 stores in 1975 and later became 276 stores in 1980.

Wal-Mart employees also benefit from this merger. Many are given stock options in return for their loyalty. In 1970, Sam Walton began selling shares to the company on the table. Wal-Mart’s shares were valued at $47 in 1971, this was not enough to make a millionaire but increased to $49,875 per share in 1982. This is enough for the children’s tuition which is the ambition of many Wal-Mart employees.

Wal-Mart’s attitude is conservative with acquisitions but is always strategic. The first two acquisitions were to buy Mohr Value Stores and Hutcheson Shoe Company in 1977, and then buy the Big K Kuhn Shop in 1981. It took another nine years for Wal-Mart to make another acquisition. Wal-Mart’s internal growth mostly comes from several Wal-Mart stores.

Sam Walton remained with the company throughout his life, he continued to visit stores and meet employees even walking with them around the store when they did their assignments. Walton promised to do hula by wearing hula skirts outside the NYSE as a sign of solidarity with employees if the company made a pre-tax profit of 8%. This will make the movement of public action simple. The employees finally managed to make it happen. In 1998, Walton was listed in Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the 20th century.
