Review of the Walmart® Credit Card versus Walmart® Mastercard in 2019. Walmart Credit Cards and Walmart Mastercard are very popular for special financing offers and cashing back registers. Are they worth it? Find out here.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, offers two consumer credit cards: Walmart Credit Cards and Walmart Mastercard. These cards provide money back at Walmart and several affiliated stores.

You will get a Walmart “3-2-1 Save” gift program, which consists of:

  1. 3% cashback from eligible Walmartcom purchases (but not for purchases at Walmart physical stores!).
  2. Get 2% cashback at Murphy USA and gas stations participating with Walmart.
  3. Cashback 1% elsewhere.

There is also a small, $25 credit registration bonus after making a purchase of $25 Walmart in the first 24 hours after your account is opened.

Sometimes, cardholders will be given special financing offers, such as no interest for six months, 12 months, or 24 months. In some cases, if you don’t pay the balance on time, this offer will charge interest all the way back to the date of purchase. Be careful!

Walmart Credit Cards and Walmart Mastercard are mostly the same, except for places you can use them. Walmart Credit Cards can only be used at Walmart, Murphy USA gas stations, and several other retailers. You can use Walmart Mastercard anywhere, as long as Mastercard is accepted.

If you shop at Walmart in the past, it’s likely that an employee has encouraged you to apply for one of these cards.

We do not recommend getting one of these cards. They do not offer excellent gifts or benefits, and Synchrony, the issuing bank, is known to have poor customer support. Based on our readers’ reviews, it seems like most people agree. You can do better with other cash back credit cards that offer more prizes and can be used anywhere.

Walmart Mastercard may be right for you if you spend a lot of money at Walmartcom every year.

Suggestion: Use these cards as part of your credit card strategy

  1. Consider applying a different card: These cards are only useful for shopping at Walmartcom, and may only make sense if you spend a lot of money there every month. You can get better gift, benefit and customer support programs with general use gift cards.
  2. Shop at Walmartcom: Use this card to get a 3% cash back at Walmartcom, including purchases that you pay online and take in the store.
  3. Buy gasoline at several stations: You will get 2% back at the Walmart and Murphy gas stations, but this is rather rare. You can get better deals on more stations with other gift credit cards for gas.
  4. Be wise with special financing offers: You may get a financing offer without interest or deferred interest. Be sure to read the requirements carefully so you don’t have to pay additional interest fees.
  5. Build a positive credit history: Retail store credit cards tend to be more accessible to people with average or bad credit, so you can use Walmart cards to increase your credit score over time.
  6. If you already have it, don’t close it: Because there are no annual fees, you can keep this card open indefinitely to increase credit utilization and average account age. This will be better for your credit score than closing the card.

Rewards.

Walmart Credit Cards and Walmart Mastercard have exactly the same reward program, both for making and redeeming.

Generate Expenditures Rewards
  1. 3% cash refund for purchases: at Walmartcom and through the Walmart mobile app
  2. 2% cash back on gas at: Walmart gas stations and Murphy USA gas stations
  3. 1% money back elsewhere.
  4. Offer Bonus Registration; Credit statement $25 after making a minimum purchase of $25 in your first 24 hours with a card

So you will get 3% back only at Walmartcom, and when shopping through the Walmart application. Normal purchases made at a store at Walmart will only get 1% back.
