The Biggest Employer in Each Country
US. is the third most populous country in the world, so it takes a lot of labor to keep the government running. It is not surprising that, in most states, both state or federal governments are the best employers. California state alone employs 1/4 million federal workers.
New York State is a unique case because NYC city workers are the best employers.
Technically, the biggest employer on the planet is the U.S. Defense Department, and in eight states, there are more active military personnel than any private businessman.
When we exclude direct government and military work, several trends emerge. Universities and hospitals – often overlapping between them – are top employers in almost half of the states.
In some cases, top employers reflect the industry that is well known in the region. General Motors, for example, is still the top company in Michigan. In Nevada? MGM Resorts International, with more than 55,000 employees.
In the case of large-scale employment, there is one of the most prominent regional trends – the vast blue expanse of Walmart countries.
Walmart is the largest company in the world based on revenue, and there are more than 3,500 Walmart Supercentres spread throughout the United States alone. It takes about 1% of the private sector workforce in the United States to keep this large box store fleet running. In Arkansas, that number jumped to 4%, with around a third of the total retail workforce employed in retail giants. https://bit.ly/2VpZw7K
